About the beautiful city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia
With over one million people and often said to be one of the loveliest cities in Australia, Perth the capital of Western Australia (the largest state in Australia) is otherwise known as the City of Lights, so called because of the historic fly-over of the first Mercury spacecraft in the year 1962. To greet the American Astronaut Colonel John Glenn on his orbital flight, thousands upon thousands of house, office, street and porch lights were switched on, transforming the city into a blazing gem of light. 35 years later, Perth once again illuminated its skies in welcome to John Glenn during his space flight in 1998. Perth City is located along the banks of the Swan River (12 km away from the ocean), between the Darling Ranges and the Indian Ocean.
